Attending a local preschool gives a child the opportunity to make friends with future primary school classmates preparing them for the transition to ‘big school’ when the time comes.
Hickling preschool also runs a dedicated ‘steps to school’ session on Wednesday afternoons for children ready to attend primary school in the following September. The more structured format helps to prepare children for the transition and includes visits to Kinoulton Primary School and the opportunity to make friends with future primary school classmates.
Each week, children who attend the session will practice a ‘letter of the week’. We encourage children to bring an item from home that begins with the letter and will practice the sound of the letter to support the phonics work they will do after transition to primary school. For details on which Letter of the Week it is, please see our Facebook page. This session runs along side the normal preschool afternoon so younger children can be involved with the letter learning but other activities are also available to them.
The children also visit Kinoulton primary school each term for school dinners and to join the reception class for afternoon activities.
